    Product Description
With SJS-FR One Install Does It All--Fire-Rated, Watertight, Traffic Bearing, 100% Movement, Quiet, Non-Invasive Anchoring, UL 2079 Certified for Decks and Floors

    • SJS-FR1 (1-hour rated) and SJS-FR2 (2-hour rated) are designed to provide a watertight, fire-rated, trafficable joint system in 4-inch (100mm) through 10-inch (250mm) joint openings, in decks including parking decks, stadium concourses, stadium treads and risers, and other horizontal plane applications in any structure.
    • The SJS-FR SYSTEM features all of the performance advantages of the standard SJS SYSTEM and adds the significant advancement of a built-in, UL-certified fire rating.
    • The SJS-FR SYSTEM is two horizontal fire-rated joints pre-assembled in parallel adjacent to an extruded composite spline. The spline is designed as the receptor for the attachment of traffic plates that bear vehicle and other loads.
    • SJS-FR has been tested and certified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL/ULC), to the rigors of UL 2079 for both 1-hour (SJS-FR1) and 2-hour (SJS-FR2) fire-ratings.
    • The silicone-and-impregnated-foam hybrid components act to anchor the system, ensure watertightness, absorb sound, and dampen vibration.
    • Fire-retardant-impregnated foam is factory pre-coated on the underside with an intumescent fireproofing material. The traffic surface and the bottom both receive a watertight silicone outer coating. The resulting composite is then factory compressed to less than its nominal size for installation into structural or other openings.
    • The factory-assembled spline, bellows, and foam, are shipped with factory-attached installation hanger-bars.
    • Epoxy gel adhesive is field-applied to the faces of the joint opening.
    • The sealing assembly is lowered into the joint gap where it self-expands into the epoxy adhesive.
    • Consecutive lengths are joined through the field-application of manufacturer-supplied, low-modulus, high-movement silicone to the spline and intersecting bellows surfaces. The fire-retardant foam ends are coated with a full layer of intumescent sealant.
    • Friction fit alignment pins prevent the joins from moving during silicone cure.
    • A field-applied silicone sealant band is injected at the bellows to joint substrate interface to complete the waterproofing.
    • The SJS-FR joint-sealing assembly installation hanger bars are removed sequentially as coverplates are lowered over the joint and screwed to the center spline, completing the installation.

    Specify the SJS-FR SYSTEM to:
    • Comply with life-safety requirements
    • Eliminate leaks and handle traffic and point loads at large structural expansion joints
    • Reduce noise
    • Eliminate hard connections to concrete
    • Prevent deterioration of concrete decks
    • Reduce tenant complaints
    • Reduce maintenance costs

Features Explained

Fire-Rated- SJS-FR1 and SJS-FR2 have been tested and certified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) to the rigors of UL 2079.

UL 2079, like ASTM E1966, was developed to encompass the fire testing of ASTM E119 and the movement cycling regime of ASTM E1399.

SJS-FR meets the requirements of ASTM E1966, ASTM E119 and ASTM E1399.

As a single unit fire-rated expansion joint it eliminates the need for additional fire stops or fire blankets or barriers at the joint gap thereby eliminating the need for multiple products to perform the roles of sealing, bridging and fire-rating joints.

EMSHIELD SJS-FR1 has been tested in accordance with UL 2079 in the configurations depicted in UL Systems FF-D-1091 and FF-D-2014 and ULC System JF140. EMSHIELD SJS-FR2 has also been tested and certified in UL Systems FF-D-1092 , FF-D-2015 and ULC System JF142

Where UL tested listings do not meet your specific project conditions ask EMSEAL for an engineered judgment.

Watertight-The tensionless silicone bellows are installed flush to the mounting height of the system and just below the cover plate ensuring watertightness at the traffic surface. This eliminates the need for ineffective moisture barriers and secondary gutter systems.

Sound Attenuation – The flanking impregnated foam and silicone hybrid dampens sound and shock effectively. When installed over EMSEAL-supplied elastomeric nosing material, the result is arguably the quietest watertight cover plate system available.

Rapid Installation– Using non-invasive anchoring the SJS-FR eliminates hard metal-to-concrete connections as well as intrusive pins, anchors, screws, bolts or tracks, trays or rails. The system is locked to the joint faces by the backpressure of the foam and an epoxy adhesive, and by the weight of the assembly.

And because SJS-FR1 installs entirely from the top of the slab, there is no need for utility lifts and extra holding labor. Furthermore, a continuous run of SJS-FR1, and therefore continuity of fire protection and complete compartmentalization, is not complicated by working around the installation of other under-slab systems like plumbing, electrical, mechanical and HVAC components.

Self-Locating Cover Plate Screws– The center spline is a continuous receptor for the coverplate screws that are self-tapped into the anchor channel. This dramatically reduces the installation-related problems of locating self-centering, sliding ball devices and pantographs. The probability of screws being left out is eliminated ensuring proper anchoring.

Self-Locking, Vibration-Dampened Screws – Vibration in systems that rely on metal-to-metal connections and contact points is the main cause of screw loosening. SJS by EMSEAL minimizes vibration through the dampening action of the massive and continuous springs of impregnated foam along the entire length of the joint. In addition, 30 pounds of force is required to loosen the screws offering excellent screw tightness without the need for thread-lock compounds.

Field-Adjustable Plate Support– Concrete in new and retrofit applications is inevitably uneven across and along the joint. The SJS-FR is installed over a leveling-bed of EMSEAL-supplied elastomeric nosing material providing the ability to fine-tune the support of cover plate sections reducing rocking and noise caused by unleveled plates. Systems that attach or utilize intrusive extruded rails to receive sliding ball and socket devices cannot be adjusted to eliminate unevenness across and down the length of the joint.

Continuity of Seal – All EMSEAL expansion joint systems feature continuity of seal through changes in plane and direction –– an essential performance differentiator. Fabricated transitions from deck to wall, at curbs, sidewalks, parapets, tees, and crosses are available with the SJS-FR.

Finite Element Analysis (FEA) Compiled Safety Factors– Prior to field trials, the SJS by EMSEAL was modeled using FEA to determine the suitability of design to worst case possible parking deck loads. Under the scenario of a 4,000 lb vehicle skidding across the joint system to full stop once past the cover plate, FEA modeling predicted lateral displacement of the cover plate of less than 3/4-inches (19mm) and safety factors in key components as follows:

FEA Safety Factors:Traffic Plate - 5; Screws - 11; Spline Pins - 10; Center Spline - 7

Design/System/Construction/Assembly Usage Disclaimer
This material has been tested to UL/ULC 2079 and is manufactured under UL’s Follow-Up Service. The material is being supplied as a fire-rated component of a wall or floor assembly. It has been tested to UL 2079 in assemblies as depicted in EMSEAL’s various listings in the UL Online Certifications Directory. Use of this material in assembly configurations other than depicted in the named UL listings will not encumber or lower the resistance of the deck or wall assembly but is done so at the designers’ discretion and responsibility for designing substrates as part of a fire rated assembly that meet applicable standards for the project. Similarly, the published information in the UL Listings cannot always address every construction nuance encountered in the field. Authorities Having Jurisdiction should be consulted in all cases as to the particular requirements covering the installation and use of UL Listed or Classified products or materials. Authorities Having Jurisdiction should be consulted before construction to ensure that specific adjacent substrates and assemblies are detailed and constructed to meet local fire-rating requirements.
